We all consume Malt Extract in one way or the other. Malt Extract is nothing else but  an all natural, nutritious, whole grain sweetener. It is produced from malted barley, a whole grain with natural enzymes.  There are two types of Malt Extract – Dry Malt Extract and Liquid Malt Extract.

Dried Malt Extract also referred to as DME is the primary sugar source in extract brewing and can be used in partial-mash or all grain brewing to adjust flavor, color and gravity of brews.

The other one we have is Liquid Malt Extract. It is a sweetener, for the most part utilized as a dietary supplement. Liquid Malt Extract is honey-yellow  colored liquid having a characteristic malty flavor. Grinding of Malt is the first step of the conversion process of Barley Malt into Liquid Malt Extract. It then undergoes a mashing process and is filtered to separate the wort. The wort is then concentrated to produce Liquid Malt Extract, a thick syrup which is generally concentrated to 80% solids. LME finds application in manufacturing of health drinks, pharmaceutical , biscuit & confectionery industries. It is sometimes also used in the manufacturing of beer or malt spirit.

Barley Malt syrup contains vitamins & minerals and being a natural product, it does not have any chemicals. . Malt syrups are mild sweet, having rich and mellow taste and mild sweet in comparison to honey, sugar and maple syrup. It less likely beats the taste of other foods and is also used for sweetening hot drinks or baked foods or used as toppings for pancakes, cakes and desserts. You can eat it by using it on bread or pancakes,  using it as an ingredient in malted milk desserts and drinks or you can even use it in cakes, cookies, brownies and ice cream.
